Among her many talents, my wife Cindy is an avid and very talented garden designer. In 2003, our garden was chosen to be included in the annual West Seattle Garden Tour.
Cindy and I collaborated to alter the shape of our backyard, creating a series of biomorphically shaped, raised planting beds, that came to be known as our "chain of islands".
Inspired by the lush tropical feel of the garden, I went to work creating the "Afterlife Series".
The first 3 pieces in the "Afterlife Series" were formed on my hyrdraulic press and anchored in the "islands" with concealed concrete bases. Again, the material I chose was a 1" diameter solid steel rod, each painted a seperate vibrant color of vermillion, chrome yellow and brilliant orange.
The titles "Afterlife 16, 17 & 18" were attached to the work as a statement about the subjective nature of religion.
The "Afterlife Series" was added to with an additional piece, this time composed of 1" diameter stainless steel rod, titled "Afterlife 13".
In the fall of 2003 the "Afterlife Series" was displayed in an exhibit at the Post Alley Sculpture Garden in downtown Seattle.
