"YUMMY, LUSCIOUS, CREAMY FILLING was my entry for the
2006 West Edge Sculpture Invitational.
It was displayed at the Harbor Steps
The exhibition ran from July 26 - October 29, 2006.

The images below show the construction of the piece which took around 3 months to complete. The statement to the right appeared in the exhibition catalog as well as the exhibition website.

This piece actually was designed to appear in a lush garden with the base buried underground. I was never really satisfied with it's location at Harbor Steps, but sometimes you just have to go with the flow.

Yummy, Luscious, Creamy Filling

“One of the main functions of an artist is to provide subject matter that stimulates thought and creates dialogue. Yummy, Luscious, Creamy Filling does that and more. I like to think of it as a metaphorical smorgasbord.

I’ve been thinking about encasing one of my signature freeform style, steel rod sculptures within a shell for quite some time now.
The look I was going for with the shell was something like an exotic African ant colony, or an aboriginal religious object, or an extraterrestrial pod hurtling through space, millennium after millennium: an indestructible pod protecting it’s precious embryonic cargo”.

Creating the sculpture was physically labor intensive and loud. The exterior shell is composed of (33) 8”h x 12”w pieces of 3/16” plate steel that were hammer pounded and formed into arcs on a heavy duty steel concave bowl. The individual pieces were then formed into a ring and arc welded. The rings were then stacked, arc welded and shaped to form the vessel.
The vessel was created in 2 parts.
To provide access for viewing the interior, over (300) ½” and ¾” holes were drilled into the pod.

The interior sculpture (the filling) was formed and welded using 3/8” stainless steel rod. It was then inserted into the vessel. The 2 parts of the pod were then arc welded together to enclose its precious cargo.

A shaft links the sculpture to it’s cylindrical base and provides access for a flood lamp attached to a timer for internal illumination between dusk and dawn.

“I presume most viewers of this piece will never realize there is more to the sculpture then it’s shell. Those viewers that choose to interact with Yummy, Luscious, Creamy Filling will metaphorically get to taste its delicious secret.”
